Éste es su álbum más oscuro, con un sonido dominado por ritmos de batería densos y muy acelerados, de gran complejidad. Pese a lo que podría parecer es un trabajo más melódico que sus predecesores, con un ambiente absolutamente negativo, y unas letras más cercanas a la crítica social, política e incluso ecológica ("Blackened"). Destacan los temas "One" (fue el primer vídeoclip grabado por la banda, recogiendo escenas de la película "Johnny got his gun"; con éste vídeoclip, la banda comenzó a ser reconocida, pero al mismo tiempo, perdían fans, mismos que los tacharon de vendidos), "To Live Is to Die" (dedicado a Cliff Burton basándose en los bocetos de una canción que se encontraba componiendo y aunque es un tema instrumental, se oye un poema que fue compuesto por el fallecido bajista), "...And Justice for All" y "Blackened". Esta producción marca un hito en el equipamiento de las guitarras de Metallica, ya que dejan sus full stacks valvulares Marshall, para apostar por Mesa Boogie, obteniendo un sonido mucho más agresivo. la unica pega que se le puede achacar al disco es, a pesar de la evolucion, la escasa calidad en la produccion y el escaso volumen que tiene el bajo, el cual, casi no se oye o es imposible atisbar en muchos momentos.

Como Master of Puppets y ...And Justice for All, Ride the Lightning es parcialmente conceptual; las canciones no narran una historia pero tratan el mismo tema, en este caso la muerte. Por ejemplo, "Fade to Black" es sobre el suicidio, "Fight Fire With Fire" es un comentario acerca de la guerra nuclear, "Ride the Lightning" sobre la silla eléctrica, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" trata sobre la muerte en la guerra y está basada en el libro homónimo de Ernest Hemingway. "Trapped Under Ice" podría ser interpretada como refiriéndose a ahogarse o congelarse y "Creeping Death" detalla la esclavitud de los judíos y las plagas de la Biblia.

Kill 'Em All es el primer álbum de estudio del grupo de thrash metal Metallica.
La canción "(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth" es un solo de bajo de Cliff Burton. Una pista instrumental, con el acompañamiento en la batería de Lars Ulrich, muestra el distintivo estilo de Burton, incluyendo el uso de distorsión, el uso del pedal de wah-wah, y tapping. Éste además es el solo de bajo que Cliff estaba tocando cuando James y Lars le vieron por primera vez en un concierto. Cuando entraron en el club donde Cliff estaba tocando, ambos pensaron que el sonido venía de una guitarra. Cuando vieron que el sonido venía de un bajo inmediatamente quisieron a Cliff en el grupo.
Dave Mustaine compuso junto con Hetfield, Ulrich y Burton la mayoría de las canciones del álbum, posteriormente fue echado fuera de la banda por Hetfield y Ulrich; por lo que Hammett sólo tocó las canciones para la grabación del álbum.
La reedición de 1988 del álbum por Elektra Records añadió las canciones "Blitzkrieg" (una versión de la banda del mismo nombre) y "Am I Evil?" (de Diamond Head). Ambas versiones fueron previamente editadas como Garage Days Re-Revisited en la cara b del EP de Creeping death de la compañía Music For Nations en 1984.
